In
general, a mammogram exposes
you to smaller doses of radiation
than a general chest X-ray
would. Digital mammograms
use even less radiation than
a standard mammogram. The
digital images can be lightened
or darkened and certain areas
can be magnified for closer
examination. The images also
can be stored and retrieved
more easily, and transmitted
electronically for review
by another doctor.
Recommended Screenings:
The American Cancer Society
recommends that:
-
Women age 40 and older should
have a mammogram every year
to check for signs of breast
cancer.
-
Women under age 40 with
risk factors for breast
cancer should ask their
health care provider whether
to have mammograms and how
often to have them.
